Marsha Meili, Dorci Cotton and Barbara Davis hit the road early to Emporia State, representing the Wichita Section at “Expanding Your Horizons” on March 7, 2009. They lead two workshops, one called “Night and Day” that explores the sun, earth, time, seasons, etc. and one called “Breath Taking” which teaches the students about how lungs work. They discovered that the “Night and Day” activity had a neat setup, but didn’t really hook the girls into discussion. Once the box and earth were finished, the rest was observation.
On the other hand, the lung model was very engaging. That activity required more hands-on and the girls seemed to relate to it. On the way home, there was a spirited discussion on how to prepare for next year. One strong idea was to create a PowerPoint presentation for the career discussion session on engineering. This could be done in sections so that anyone could pick it up and present on all kinds of engineering, not just the one they do.
If anyone is interested in finding out about Expanding Your Horizons or wants to brainstorm for next year, contact Barbara at barbara.davis@swe.org.
