Do you know a SWE member (or yourself) who has received recognition outside of the Society? The Society is going to acknowledge those members in future issues of the All Together newsletter.
Contact swenews@swe.org to submit someone who has recently received an award or recognition for contributions in engineering and technology.
Here is an opportunity to be more involved at the Society level. The Awards & Recognition Committee is currently seeking volunteers to judge the individual awards program. Judges for each category will be selected based on personal experiences and eligibility to prevent conflicts of interest. Judges need to be available from April 15 to May 31 to assist with the selection process. Judges will have approximately two to three weeks to evaluate the applications. Typically, no more than 10 packets will be provided to a judge per award in which she choses to participate.
If interested in participating, see more details at this link.

The Ad Astra Kansas Initiative is sponsoring a project for the Kansas Sesquicentennial—Science in Kansas: 150Years and Counting. They have created a series of “trading cards” highlighting Kansas scientists of accomplishment with the goal of inspiring young Kansans to go into STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

The Wichita Section of SWE is proud to announce that Allison Wright is the first ever recipient of the Wichita Council of Engineering Societies (WCES) Allison Wright Award for Outstanding Young Engineer. The award was presented to her at the annual WCES banquet on February 17, 2011.
Established in 1989 and made up of 23 professional and technical engineering societies, WCES has a common goal of promoting engineering and engineering in the community. Each year the council presents its Engineering Service Award to an individual who best exemplifies the engineering profession through volunteer service. Allison was nominated for this award in 2011.
Upon reviewing her nomination package, the awards committee realized that they had no vehicle specifically designated to reward young engineers. The previous recipients of the Engineering Service Award were all more experienced members of the community. Thus, WCES decided to create the Allison Wright Award for Outstanding Young Engineer. In naming it after Allison, they sought to honor both her service and her role in illuminating this need to recognize and encourage young engineers. The nominee must be less than 30 years of age at the time of nomination. The candidate will have contributed significantly to the engineering profession within the scope of their limited career years. Nominations will be open annually, but the award will be given only when an appropriate candidate is presented.
5:30 PM:
Another intense day! We had over 200 girls at the “Invent It! Build It!” event. They seemed to have a great time and we adults had a great time working with them. They did 3 Design Squad activities – Pop Fly, Kick Start, and Electric Gameboard. I can’t begin to tell you how much duct tape we went through! One highlight was a keynote address by Judy Lee. You may know her from the “Engineer Your Life” website where she is featured in a video clip. Judy is the co-host of a new PBS show called “Design Squad Nation” that premiers in January on PBS. Look for it.
I got to the convention center at 6:30 AM to start setting up and got back to my hotel at 5:00 PM. It was well worth the time and energy involved. I set a new record for myself at this convention – I went to ZERO sessions, one tour and one meeting. Part of that was because we tried to see the shuttle on Friday, but mainly it was due to preparing for IIBI. The first year you do something, it always takes more effort.
It will happen again next year in Chicago. If you come to conference, please consider being involved.
10:30 EDT/9:30 EST PM:
Back from “Celebrate SWE” and ready to sleep. On top of everything, it is time change tonight.
Good news! Wichita won the Communications Award for our Website. Way to go, Kim!
