WSU SWE Events

Monday, October 12th, 2009

LEGO Mindstorms:   There are a couple of opportunities for those who are interested in helping out with this ongoing event.  (1)The WSU section will be building the course on Friday, October 30th from 3:30-? (you don’t have to take off work to come help, just come afterward) and Saturday, October 31st from 9am-2pm.  Location will be confirmed later.  The course is already designed but they could use some help building it.  (2) Volunteers are needed to judge the day of the competition.  This event will be on Saturday, March 6th.  Judges may also need to be there for the Trial Day which is Saturday, February 20th.  Judging just consists of watching the teams attempt our course & giving them points for completing tasks, based off the created point system.

WISE/DSI Breakfast Chat:  SWE is having a breakfast chat with some of the girl participants of the Wallace Scholar competition.  The students are looking for 1 or 2 professional members to talk to the participants.  The breakfast chat will be from approx. 8:30-9:30am on Friday, November 13th.

Contact Sarah Stallard at sastallard@wichita.edu if you can help with either event.

“Engineering In Action” outreach with the Girl Scouts

Monday, October 12th, 2009

The local Girl Scout Council has set the date for their first meeting of the “Engineering In Action” program. It is scheduled for Monday October 26, 2009 at 3:00 at Horace Mann Middle School. We need engineers to attend this meeting to chat with middle school girls about engineering and to help with several simple activities. All we have to do is show up and participate.

This is during work hours, but it is a great opportunity. Please contact Barbara Davis at barbara.davis@swe.org if you can manage to come.

Be a Wichita State Career Connection

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Wichita State’s Career Services department is looking for volunteers for their Career Connections program.  Career Connections puts Wichita State students in touch with WSU alumni and friends to learn about the real working world.  With so many engineering students, they’re looking for a wide variety of engineers in the local workforce to help out.

You can volunteer to be “shadowed” and let students spend a few hours a day observing you on your job.  You could also meet informally with students to be interviewed for 15 or 30 minutes.

Choosing a career can be a daunting task for college students, and little bit of information they can gather about jobs is vital in helping them make the right choices.  Your experiences could be the guidance they need.  Sign up online through the Career Connections profile website: http://webs.wichita.edu/?u=CAREERSERVICES2&p=/CConnectalumfriends/
