Jennifer Marshall and Jessica Stitt attended Expanding Your Horizons for middle school girls on March 10 at Emporia State University. They gave a career talk to 19 girls. They also did two workshops – one on simulating an oil spill and clean up and one on launching paper rockets the girls each made. They had 9 girls for oil spill and 11 for rockets.

Expanding your Horizons
Sunday, February 19th, 2012The outreach committee is headed to Expanding Your Horizons at Emporia State University on March 10. This is an annual event that SWE has helped at for many years. SWE volunteers lead a career discussion and hands-on workshops for middle school girls. This is a really neat event. The activity kits are already prepared. If you are available to help, let Barb Davis know.

Expanding Your Horizons Recap
Sunday, March 14th, 2010On Saturday March 6, Deana Fitzsimmons and Jessica Stitt packed up Deana’s SUV and headed up to Emporia State University to participate in Expanding Your Horizons. This is an event that the Wichita SWE section has been supporting for several years.
They started with a Career Discussion where they spoke about Engineering and Technology to more than 15 middle school girls. In the afternoon they hosted 2 separate workshops where the girls had a hands-on opportunity to learn about Math, Science and Technology. The girls got to learn about electricity by building their own Steady Hand Game. The best part was seeing how excited they were when the project was over and they got to see their lights turn on—and they were the ones to have built the circuit. They also got to learn about sound waves by making their own Thumb Pianos. This project was a bit more difficult that the circuit, but all of the students seemed to enjoy making something they got to take home with them. Both of the hands on activities were from the Agilent AfterSchool kits provided to the section from National SWE.
Overall it was a great learning experience for both the students in attendance as well as for Deana and Jessica. They highly suggest if you get a chance to attend you should take it.

Volunteers Needed for Expanding Your Horizons at Emporia State University
Monday, January 18th, 2010March 6, 2010, all day
We need several people to assist with the workshops at Expanding Your Horizons. Wichita SWE has been involved with EYH for a number of years and we have enjoyed working with these middle school girls.
We are signed up to present:
20 minute Career Discussion – PowerPoint
1 hour Workshop – Steady Hand Electrical Game
1 hour Workshop – Thumb Piano
The PowerPoint presentation is being created for Wichita SWE, you would need only to make personal comments.
The workshops will use Agilent Kits. Those are available for review at any time from Barbara.
This is really a fun trip. We carpool up, have a great spaghetti lunch and then stop at the chocolate store on our way home.
Please contact Barbara Davis at barbara.davis@swe.org, if you are interested, or if you have any questions.

Expanding Your Horizons
Thursday, March 12th, 2009Marsha Meili, Dorci Cotton and Barbara Davis hit the road early to Emporia State, representing the Wichita Section at “Expanding Your Horizons” on March 7, 2009. They lead two workshops, one called “Night and Day” that explores the sun, earth, time, seasons, etc. and one called “Breath Taking” which teaches the students about how lungs work. They discovered that the “Night and Day” activity had a neat setup, but didn’t really hook the girls into discussion. Once the box and earth were finished, the rest was observation.
On the other hand, the lung model was very engaging. That activity required more hands-on and the girls seemed to relate to it. On the way home, there was a spirited discussion on how to prepare for next year. One strong idea was to create a PowerPoint presentation for the career discussion session on engineering. This could be done in sections so that anyone could pick it up and present on all kinds of engineering, not just the one they do.
If anyone is interested in finding out about Expanding Your Horizons or wants to brainstorm for next year, contact Barbara at barbara.davis@swe.org.
