A Few Expo PhotosWednesday, February 29th, 2012We’d like to extend a special thanks to Chelsea Simmon, who photographed the happenings at Expo this year. Here are a few photos she took Saturday. Stay tuned to Chelsea’s facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/csphotographywichita) for updates.
Engineering Expo: Volunteer Photographer wantedTuesday, January 10th, 2012Our annual Engineering Expo teaches hundreds of kids about science & engineering, and is entirely run by volunteers. Volunteering at expo is a lot of fun and, for the most part, requires no special skills. We have run into a specific need though: a photographer! We use photos on our website, in presentations to sponsors, and in the award-winning internationally distributed SWE magazine. You’ll receive credit for your work and a big thank-you from all of us organizing expo. Expo runs from 9am – 12 pm on Saturday, February 25th. You will not have to be there the whole time, only an hour or two. To volunteer, send an email to expo@wichitaswe.org with a link to your website and a bit about your experience. This task is best suited for someone with some photojournalism experience, but we’re not going to be terribly picky. We just need someone with a decent camera and enthusiasm for our goal: exposing kids to the coolness of science and engineering! Call for slideshow photosTuesday, March 29th, 2011The banquet committee is putting our annual end-of-year slideshow together and would welcome any photos you’ve got to add that show all the fun we had in FY 2011. If you uploaded photos to our website, we’ve got them. You can also send them to allison.terry@swe.org. 2010 Holiday Party PhotosSaturday, January 15th, 2011This year’s holiday party was a lot of fun. The white elephant gift exchange provided a lot of laughs. Thank you Cindy for opening up your beautiful home to us again. Fun at Dondi EventSunday, November 15th, 2009The Society of Women Engineers hosted an event with Dondi Scumaci on October 29th. Over 50 people attended the event, including a diverse group of engineering and non-engineering professionals from companies around Wichita. The event was held at the Olive Tree Banquet Hall, where Dondi gave an excellent presentation on her book Ready, Set … Grow. Dondi Scumaci is an international speaker, author, and an expert in professional and personal development, and she gave her typical high energy performance for the group. Many of the Spirit AeroSystems and Boeing employees are familiar with Dondi, who consults on mentoring programs and provides training on professional development. Scumaci’s first book, Designed for Success, is an excellent overview for empowering yourself to be successful. In Ready, Set … Grow, Dondi’s focus is on personal growth, improving yourself and enjoying life. In her typical style, Dondi used stories and personal antidotes to make key points on managing stress and worry and ridding your life of damaging relationships.  Throughout her book, Dondi recommends journaling as a way to track progress as you improve and grow. After her presentation to the group, a book signing closed out a fun and informative evening. A Piece of History – Wichita Section takes flight on a KC-135Sunday, June 14th, 2009One of our section’s favorite programs to remember occured on June 14, 1987 when we got the chance to fly aboard a KC-135 refueling tanker. McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita Kansas is home to the 22nd Air Refueling Wing, which has operated and trained crews on the KC-135 since the mid-1980s. SWE section members learned about the airplane, talked with crew members, went for a flight and took pictures. The last picture was taken laying down by the boom operator – an exciting once-in-a-lifetime chance that any engineer would celebrate. The Future of Technical Education in South Central KansasMonday, April 20th, 2009We have all been hearing about changes going on at the Wichita Area Technical College, and the reality is amazing. Yes, there are new buildings in-work at Jabara airport, but that’s only a small part of it. The really terrific thing is the changes in the way they plan to offer education and the partnerships they are creating. A major aspect of it all is providing a complete subject in a single piece and allowing the student to add on other pieces, like building blocks, to reach their goal. It is a very flexible and adaptive way to approach life long learning. Seventeen SWE members and guests put on hardhats and toured the soon to be completed Gateway (administration) building at the National Center for Aviation Training. Also under construction at that location are a manufacturing training facility and an aircraft maintenance training site. After the tour we trekked over to the WATC Comotara Center facility. WATC President, Pete Gustaf, gave us a quick tour of that building and touched on the changes that have been made and those planned for the curriculum taught there. After dinner, Pete talked to us about the difficulties in designing an educational plan for jobs that are not even dreamed of and how to keep in front of the obsolescence curve. A Piece of History – 1983 Regional RetreatSunday, March 1st, 2009A year after receiving our charter as a new Society of Women Engineers section, we got together with the Kansas City section for a retreat at the Rock Springs ranch in Junction City, Kansas. SWE members from around the area came together to relax, network, and listen to presentations. Shortly after our retreat SWE adopted a regional struction, separating sections into 10 regions across the United States. We fondly remember our “retreat” as being the first SWE regional conference in the nation.
