Look out for a new professional development series in 2013!
Our second professional development event of the year had a great turnout including 6 SWE professional members and 4 non-members in attendance. Shamus Donlon from Realization delivered an innovative talk about the inefficiencies of multitasking, and how to apply better strategies for prioritizing and getting our work done.
Multitasking: Killer of Speed and Productivity
Projects are the lifeblood of growth and development, and the industry spends six trillion dollars
on projects every year. It is therefore unfortunate that most projects are late, and over budget.
Multitasking used to be considered efficient. Simultaneously talking on the phone, dashing off
emails and directing subordinates were viewed as the ultimate in productivity. Recent research,
however, shows that multitasking is actually the #1 killer of speed and efficiency in projects.
We will explore the effects of multitasking on resources, managers and organizations as a whole
and discuss ways to reduce multitasking to complete projects 20-50% faster.
About the speaker: Shamus Donlon is an Strategic Services Director for Realization Technologies, Inc. He has a Bachelor of Science in Operations Research and Management Science from the University of California Berkeley. He has experience in managing and improving execution for several multi-billion dollar organizations and is a specialist in MRO and Engineering Project Execution Management. Shamus has managed engineering productivity improvement projects for numerous organizations including the world’s largest supplier of commercial airplane assemblies and components, as well as implemented Realization solution for several US government MRO sites across both the US Army and USAF.
