Region i 2013 Conference Call for Speakers
Sunday, September 16th, 2012Region i is looking for speakers for the conference on March 1-2 in Omaha, NE.
Session topics of interest are: Networking, Effective communication, Leadership development, Promoting yourself, Financial/investment, Compensation, Project management, Learning to say ‘No’, Dealing with difficult people, Stress management, and Outreach. If you have another presentation topic not listed here, you are more than welcome to submit the abstract for consideration.
Presentations typically last approximately 45 minutes with 10 minutes for Q&A. Presenters should submit the below items to: Lara Syrocki, by October 31, 2012 for consideration.

-Â Short abstract (100 words or less)
-Â 3 to 4 Learning Objectives of presentation
-Â Short biography (30 words or less) including current job title, very brief description of responsibilities and educational background. If there is more than one speaker, information for EACH panelist must be provided.

Region i Leadership Summit Summary
Saturday, August 25th, 2012Three of Wichita SWE’s members attended the first ever Region i Leadership Summit! Michelle, Lili, and Allison spent Saturday in Kansas City with 40 other Region i members participating in section officer training, strategic and operational planning sessions, and several Leadership Coaching modules. It was great to meet other leaders from around the section and share ideas for events! Region i hopes to hold this event annually!

Wichita Section at the Society of Women Engineers Region i conference, with the award for SWE-tention, the highest membership retention rate in the region
11 professional members from Wichita attended the Region i Conference in Tulsa, OK on Saturday, March 3. This year there was record attendance at the conference with around 230 people attending. There were two tours offered to local companies as well as many sessions covering topics such as STEM Outreach, Collegiate to Professional Transfer, and a mini Career Fair. The day ended with a behind the scenes tour of the Tulsa Aquarium followed by dinner held in the Aquarium lobby and a keynote speech given by Wichita’s Cindy Hoover. Region awards were given out at the dinner and the Wichita Professional section won the membership retention award!!! The conference was great for networking and catching up with old friends! The 2013 Region i Conference will be held Omaha, NE.

Region i Update March 2011
Thursday, March 17th, 2011A vote was held at the joint meeting for the 2012 region conference bid. There were four strong bids. The tellers committee collected one vote from each section present and tallied the votes. Congratulations to our 2012 region conference bid winner – Tulsa!! We look forward to networking, sessions, a career fair AND dinner at the Aquarium with the sharks.
The first ever region membership awards were presented at the conference dinner on Saturday evening. Congratulations to the following winners, who received a certificate, the Wordle software and a check for $100 + $1 for every % increase in membership.
- SWE-Crease Award for Collegiates – The award for highest growth for a collegiate section goes to The University of Nebraska-Omaha (150% increase)
- SWE-Tention Award for Collegiates -Â The award for the highest retention for a collegiate section goes to The University of Missouri-Columbia (77.6% increase)
- SWE-Crease Award for Professionals – The award for highest growth for a professional section goes to The Eastern Nebraska Section (29.6% increase)
- SWE-Tention Award for Professionals – The award for the highest retention for a professional section goes to The Mid-Missouri Section (93.8% increase)
These are annual awards. How did Wichita measure up to the winners? For SWE-tention Wichita is at ~70%. For SWE-crease, Wichita is at ~10%. Let’s try to do better next year.

Monday, February 21st, 2011Region I needs a successor for Vicki Johnson’s senate seat to represent the region. The term begins July 1, 2011 and runs until June 30, 2013. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about SWE and to become engaged at the regional/national level. All members are encouraged to nominate themselves and/or other eligible members.

Nominations are also needed for the following region offices by March 1: Lt. Governor, Secretary, Treasurer. See previous post Region Officers
- Nominee’s name and Position for which she is nominated and Section/MAL affiliation
- Verification of eligibility, according to requirements indicated below (SWE member number)
- Qualifications, work experiences and SWE involvement (this requirement is for the Nominating committee only – and will not be part of the ballot)
- Contact information (address, phone number, email)
- A PARAGRAPH containing the candidate’s biography and vision for contributing to SWE through this position. (400 word limit).
Senator Eligibility Requirements:
- Candidate must be a voting member of SWE in good standing.
- Candidate must be assigned to Region i as a member of one of the professional sections or as a professional member-at-large (MAL)
Recommendations:
- Senators should not serve concurrently as a member of the SWE Board of Directors (BOD) and the SWE Senate, formerly known as the Council of Representatives (COR).
- Prior SWE leadership experience of at least one year would help the Senator in the effective performance of her duties.
- Senators should have a working knowledge of the organization and its bylaws.
- Senators should be able and willing to travel to Senate and Region meetings and actively communicate at the Region level.
Senator responsibilities include:
- Charting the strategic direction of SWE by developing and adopting long-range goals for SWE.
- Developing statements of external policy on issues or positions that have broad implications for the professional environment and the Society as an organization.
- Conducting essential dialogue on long-term trends and issues of common interest.
- Timely voting upon recommendations from the membership presented as motions.
- Establishing policies on the use and restrictions of contingency funds.
- Approving changes to bylaws.
- Attending Senate and Region meetings
- Being the voice of their constituents.
- Logging into SWE Senate Community and review postings.
Length of Terms:Â The term of Senator shall be two years.
