WATC Tour with NAWIC

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Our NAWIC sisters invited SWE to join a tour of the new WATC facility on October 26. The buildings & grounds are all finished compared to the SWE tour about 2 years ago. It is a great facility, well planned for use, access and expansion, as well as beautiful. We got to see most of the maintenance side and some of the manufacturing side. It was so interesting that we ran long. Randy Roebuck, Executive Director for Technology & Operations was our guide.

A couple important points to note are their online training and the customized training that they can do for industry. They are also accredited to do national trainings like Six Sigma and testing like ACT and FAA certifications.

Of the 18 present, Catherine Rocky and I represented SWE. I was able to join the NAWIC ladies afterwards for dinner at Louie’s. They discussed Block Kids, scheduled for February 5, 2011, and I got in my pitch to have our EXPO flyers distributed at that event.

The Future of Technical Education in South Central Kansas

Monday, April 20th, 2009
SWE members gather up and get started to tour the new WATC facility

Wichita section gathers up and gets started to tour the new WATC facility

We have all been hearing about changes going on at the Wichita Area Technical College, and the reality is amazing. Yes, there are new buildings in-work at Jabara airport, but that’s only a small part of it. The really terrific thing is the changes in the way they plan to offer education and the partnerships they are creating. A major aspect of it all is providing a complete subject in a single piece and allowing the student to add on other pieces, like building blocks, to reach their goal. It is a very flexible and adaptive way to approach life long learning.

SWE members Vicki Johnson and Cindy Hoover hear more about the plans

Seventeen SWE members and guests put on hardhats and toured the soon to be completed Gateway (administration) building at the National Center for Aviation Training. Also under construction at that location are a manufacturing training facility and an aircraft maintenance training site. After the tour we trekked over to the WATC Comotara Center facility. WATC President, Pete Gustaf, gave us a quick tour of that building and touched on the changes that have been made and those planned for the curriculum taught there. After dinner, Pete talked to us about the difficulties in designing an educational plan for jobs that are not even dreamed of and how to keep in front of the obsolescence curve.
