Day 14 Saturday June 8
A somewhat more relaxed day. We all slept in. Pat & Daria called about 9:45 to see if I wanted to eat breakfast. I was up, but not dressed, so we met at 10 and went down to a restaurant that we had chosen last night. Joe & Linda had already gone out to “do” the Coliseum, Forum and whatever. We ate a very relaxed meal and then started to wander around our ‘neighborhood’. It is easy to get confused. The streets go in all directions and most go straight for only a few blocks. We checked our map at one point and realized that we were close to the Trevi Fountain. That was one place that Daria wanted to see. We agreed to try for it. Along the way, we passed the Presidential Palace. The fountain wasn’t far away, but very crowded. Once we saw it, we headed back to the hotel for a rest. Joe & Linda came in shortly after we did. They had already eaten and were on their way to see the church of St John Lateran. They agreed to meet us for dinner. The 3 of us went out for a quick lunch and then back for a real rest. I like this idea of a nap after lunch.
We tried for dinner closer to Roman time, i.e., at 8 pm instead of 6 pm. The streets were much livelier. We picked a restaurant just a few blocks from the square. My meal was WONDERFUL!!!! It was called finocci (sp) something – little pasta bags of cheese and pear in a walnut cream sauce. It was so delicious. We wandered around the neighborhood a bit, checking out all the places that had emerged from behind anonymous doors. We ended the evening with gelato from the place across the street from the hotel. I had “Panacea”; mint, almond milk and ginseng. It was very fresh and tasty. They used real spearmint, not mint flavor.
Not sure what tomorrow will bring. Joe & Linda want to do another long distance trek around the city, but the rest of us are not that excited. Linda even mentioned going to St Peter’s to see the pope. That would be a madhouse! Not my idea of fun.
