Day 15 Sunday June 9Rome
Another fun day & not too busy. We met at 8 and all ate breakfast. There are no 15 minute breakfasts in Rome; you savor the experience. We went back to the hotel & Joe promoted the Hop-On-Off bus tour. It goes around town and an all day pass lets you hop on and off as much as you want. There were, of course, LINES!! We walked up the hill to Stop 1 at the Terminus Station and got in line. The buses would fill up & leave at 15 minute intervals even if they filled up in 3 minutes. While waiting Linda started to talk about how they should have taken a different bus because this wouldn’t make it to the Vatican in time. Anyway the bus had place for 2, so we told them to go. I am afraid they didn’t make it. We 3 finally got on at noon and decided to just ride it around a circuit. It was very entertaining and there was a recorded tour on the bus channel. We saw lots of stuff, the highlights of Rome. When we got to the stop before the Vatican, on the other side of the river, they announced that we would be skipping the Vatican loop. The area was closed because the pope was out and about. That was about 1 pm. We finished the circuit at 1:30. Daria & Pat got off and walked back to the hotel. I stayed on until the Coliseum stop. Linda & Joe had been to the Forum the day before. Linda gave me her pass for today, just in case. It was a 2 day combo pass for the Forum, Coliseum, & Palatine Hill. I went right into the Coliseum; the long lines were for the tickets. I walked myself dizzy going around it. By then I was soaking wet & pooped – the weather has been beautiful & sunny – so I came back to the hotel stopping for gelato. This time it was cream, strawberries & almonds; good but not as good as the Panacea.
Dinner was at a little restaurant about 20 feet up the street from the hotel. There are so many places hiding behind very discrete signs; permits for signs are very expensive. It is so easy to miss them; another really nice meal. Afterwards, we walked a bit & then had our last gelato – chocolate & orange this time. Then back to the room to finish packing. I hope, hope, hope that I can make it under 50 pounds!
