It seems so crazy to think that it is October! I remember when we used to talk about 2020 as if it was some far off distant thing. Now it is only 3 months away. I hope you all are ready for a busy Fall.
Right before I was ready to send out my note, we got some amazing information for our section that I want to share with all of you. Thanks to our awards chair, our section has been working hard to fill out different awards information to be recognized for all of the hard work we have been doing. We received an email letting us know that our section will be honored at WE19 with 2 awards! We have won Best Practice – Outreach – Professional for our work on Engineering Expo. We also will be recognized as a Bronze – Professional Section for overall achievement with the SWE Mission Awards.
This September we were able to meet with the WSU section to review their resumes and work with them on their Elevator Pitches prior to the career fair. We had a great turn out of members and it was very much appreciated by the collegiate members. The Engineering Expo team kicked off their planning by giving a training session on the new, cloud based project management tool they will be using to help plan Expo. The tool is called Asana. If anyone is interested in helping with any part of Expo, please reach out to Sarah or Hannah at firstname.lastname@example.org. To officially kick off our year we had a joint event with the collegiate section at Shocker Lanes. It was another opportunity for us to visit and network not only with the collegiate section but also as the professionals. You’ll have to ask Ariel how her bowling alter ego Deb did 😊.
October is prime time for us with SWE events and this year is no different. Our GM will be this coming Monday October 7 at 6:00pm at Watermark Books. There will also be a work meeting sometime next week to help us create our items for the Alternative Gift Market. Kim Burton is the contact and will be sending out more information for the actual day soon.
I’m really excited about our upcoming Speaker on Thursday October 17 at 6:00pm. Shana Chivon Stephens will be speaking on Check Your Privilege: A Conversation at the Intersection of Gender, Race and Occupation. Another email with additional information will be coming but here is the quick link to sign up for the event.
We are also planning a fun event for members and their families on Friday October 25. This will be a trip to a pumpkin patch/corn maze. Elena is planning and more information is coming soon. We will also be working with WSU Expanding Your Horizons on Saturday the 26th. We will be hosting 3 sessions on our air powered rockets. If you are interested in volunteering for the event, please send me an email. Due to my work schedule I also need someone willing to be the SWE POC day of. If you are interested in doing that, please send me an email.
While SWE has no connection to the 2019 Ignite ICT Women’s Conference, it is something that I wanted to bring to everyone’s attention in case they are interested in attending. Early Bird admission expires on 10/18 and the event will be on Tuesday November 19. For more information about the event, please check out their website.
Thanks for being a part of SWE and I look forward to seeing you all at our events this month.
